New Christian Academy Opens in Rocky Mount, NC, Offering Faith-Based Early Education and Kindergarten Enrollment for 2025–2026

Rocky Mount, NC – A new chapter in early childhood education is beginning in Rocky Mount with the launch of Bridgeway Excellence Academy, a private Christian K–2 school dedicated to nurturing both academic foundations and spiritual growth. Founded by local educators Cynthia Wheeler and Kimberle Evans, the Academy is now enrolling kindergarten students for the 2025–2026 academic year.

The school, located in the heart of Rocky Mount, blends a love for learning with biblical values, providing a warm, supportive environment where young children can thrive. With a mission to foster early literacy and prepare children not just for school but for life, Bridgeway Excellence Academy is poised to be a cornerstone of educational excellence and faith in the community.

“We believe every child is uniquely created by God, and we’re committed to helping them grow academically, socially, and spiritually,” said Cynthia Cherry, co-founder of the Academy. “This school has been a dream in our hearts for a long time. To now be welcoming our first students is truly a blessing.”

Bridgeway Excellence Academy is open to all Christian denominations and maintains a non-denominational approach to its teachings. The school’s Statement of Faith outlines its core biblical values, emphasizing the authority of Scripture and the centrality of Jesus Christ in education.

“We want families to know that Bridgeway is more than just a school. It’s a place where faith and learning come together in powerful, life-shaping ways,” said Kimberle Evans, co-founder and lead administrator. “Our goal is to build strong, confident learners who also grow to know and trust God.”

Highly qualified educators, trained in early childhood education and child development, make up the teaching team at Bridgeway Excellence Academy. The curriculum is structured to encourage critical early literacy skills while supporting each child’s emotional and spiritual development.

“We are especially proud to provide a welcoming space for children who may have had a challenging start,” Evans added. “If a child has been retained or needs a little extra support, we are here to meet them where they are—with grace, patience, and love.”

Enrollment is now open for kindergarten students who will be five years old by August 31, 2025. Families are encouraged to schedule a visit or speak with the founders to learn more about the school’s curriculum, faith-based programming, and enrollment process.

Bridgeway’s Christian foundation is rooted in belief in the inerrant Word of God, the Trinity, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These truths guide the school’s operations and shape the nurturing culture of the classroom.

About the Founders

Cynthia Cherry • Administrator of Instruction

With more than 21 years of experience in early childhood education, Cynthia Cherry brings both passion and deep expertise to her role as Administrator of Instruction at Bridgeway Excellence Academy. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting, and is licensed to teach from Birth through Kindergarten, as well as Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.

Cynthia’s journey to education began in the medical field, but a heartfelt calling led her to the classroom. While working full-time, raising two daughters, and supporting her husband’s ministry, she returned to school to earn her teaching degree at the age of 35. That experience gave her a unique empathy for working families and a personal commitment to helping others overcome obstacles in pursuit of their goals.

“Teaching in a Christian environment is my calling,” Cherry says. “To share faith, knowledge, and love with young children—and to partner with their families—is one of life’s greatest blessings.”

Cynthia is especially fond of reading The Kissing Hand to students on their first day of school, helping ease both student and parent anxieties. As a proud grandmother to Olivia and Ava, she brings both a teacher’s skill and a grandmother’s heart to the classroom every day.

Kimberle Evans, Administrator of Business

With 27 years of experience in early childhood education, including 17 years in public school leadership, Kimberle Evans serves as Administrator of Business at Bridgeway Excellence Academy. She holds an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education and a master’s degree in K–12 Administration.

Kimberle has been honored as Instructional Assistant of the Year and Star Teacher, and she brings a wealth of classroom knowledge to her leadership role. Over the years, she has guided countless children from their first hesitant steps into confident learners—often seeing once-shy students blossom into joyful, engaged classroom leaders.

“Teaching and now stepping into educational leadership is my assignment from God,” Evans shares. “It’s not just about academics—it’s about shaping hearts, building confidence, and glorifying God in all we do.”

A wife, mother of two daughters, and godmother to many, Kimberle leads with grace, wisdom, and a deep respect for the trust families place in her care. One of her favorite children’s books, My Dog Rosie, serves as a reminder of the power of empathy—something she strives to bring into every school day.

With its combination of strong academics, loving leadership, and a Christ-centered mission, Bridgeway Excellence Academy is more than a school—it’s a ministry of education, faith, and community.
