Just a few years ago, my daughter, Deziraye, started kindergarten and was placed in Mrs. Cynthia Cherry’s classroom. I am so grateful for my daughter to be part of Mrs. Cherry’s class. Mrs. Cherry is a nice, sweet spirit and educated woman. So, I volunteered in Mrs. Cherry’s class. I have volunteered before in other classes with my older children’s classes (I didn’t force it but showed willingness to volunteer), but Mrs. Cherry class was the best, I felt welcomed, not needed.
First of all, my daughter (13 years old now) loves her to this day. She remembers her face and all. My daughter was so captured by Mrs. Cherry teaching, I would catch her emulating as if she was Mrs. Cherry, speaking in that soft voice as if she was teaching the class (lol).
I had a great experience with Mrs. Cherry. She worked with all her kids the same. The kids were different, but her passion was the same. She is dedicated with the heart to teach. With the ability to teach over 20 kindergartens in a classroom, she made it easy. She conducted her class in order and was easy to follow. The kids pick up quickly on how the class routine was structured. The patience she had was definitely gifted by God along with her educational training.
Mrs. Cherry motivated my daughter’s confidence and desire to learn. She was a great teacher to my daughter to the point I make sure I keep in touch with Mrs. Cherry.
I remember my daughter being a three-year-old walking into a daycare center for the first time, she held on tight to me because she had never been in a daycare setting before. She was afraid and started to cry when she was greeted by the friendliest face.
Mrs. Kim walked up to her and talked to her and me and reassured me that she was going to be fine. I was reluctant to believe that because my daughter Chelsey was very shy and didn’t respond well to people that she didn’t know. To my amazement in less than two weeks, my daughter was running to her classroom each day. She was smiling happy and glad to be going to school.
During the school year, she started to blossom into a confident little girl. Her vocabulary increased, it seemed like daily. When I went to visit the class, it was just so exciting to watch the teachers engage the children. They made sure that each child was included and not left out no matter what their capabilities. Ms. Kim taught my daughter that she could be anything that she desired to be. The lessons that Chelsey learned at Help Me Grow and Learn have shaped her into the woman that she has become. She went from being a shy, timid little girl to being invited to come back to speak at the school’s graduation ceremony. When she entered Kindergarten, her teachers were amazed with the knowledge that she had. I give that credit to HMGL.
When the children left that school, they graduated, but Ms. Kim never forgot about them. She followed and tracked their success all the way through high school and beyond. It was not a surprise to see her at sports events that her former children competed in. Three members of my daughter ‘s national honor society in high school attended HMGL. She was there to see them honored.
Mrs. Evans continues to show up thirty years later through very important aspects of Chelsey’s life. Chelsey affectionally calls her Aunt Kimmie. Not only has she been a blessing to her former students, but she also cares about the parents and them being successful. She is the reason that I went back to school to pursue my education. She empowers not only the students, but the whole community.
Even now at 31 years old, I can say without hesitation that Kim’s impact on my life continues to this day. I was taught by her when I was just 3 or 4 years old at Help Me Grow and Learn (HMGL) Childcare, and from those earliest moments, she helped shape who I am. I vividly remember her helping me develop social skills, nurturing my confidence, and giving me opportunities to lead even as a small child — I was proud to serve as the spokesperson at my HMGL graduation because of the encouragement she instilled in me.
What makes Kim truly extraordinary is that her care and mentorship never stopped when I left the classroom. Throughout the years, she has remained a steady and loving part of my life and a valued member of my support system. In fact, she has been such an integral part of my life that she is affectionately called “Aunt Kimmie” — a title of honor and love that holds no blood ties, but speaks volumes about the place she holds in my heart.
Whether cheering at sports events, attending graduations, or celebrating life’s milestones, Kim has always shown up with her unique blend of loving guidance and support. She corrects with grace, teaches with wisdom, and loves with the heart of someone truly called to this work.
I know I am just one of many who can say that Kim has a godly love and a rare gift for helping and teaching children of all ages. She consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty to support the whole child, in every season of life. I will be forever indebted to her for all she has poured into me — and the countless lives she continues to touch.
